Austrian space rock surfers showcase their best at Desertfest London
Mother’s Cake
Devonshire Arms, Camden
Desertfest London
Summer season is upon us and that means all sorts of live shows and festivals beckon. Beginning of May is traditionally reserved for heavier sounds thanks to Desertfest London. Camden based event celebrating all things stoner rock had some enviable names in their line up like Fu Manchu, Amenra, Black Tusk and our old friends Mondo Generator. Unfortunately our own tour was about to start and that meant missing on all those great bands.
Thankfully all was not lost as a friend suggested a quick get together to check out these amazing guys from Tyrolean Alps. I didn’t need a second invitation for MOTHER’S CAKE had me hooked a couple of years ago at the showcase festival I was attending and it was a love at first sight.
Yes, you have read it well: they come from Tyrol in Austria and they play some serious psych funk rock. Put it this way, you will never ski as good as them, and that also includes playing rock.
A gig two years ago was a blast and this one, at the DEV in Camden for Desertfest London was another successful coup for a band that has and still is going places after just over 10 years of gracing this planet. The DEV or Devonshire Arms as the full name says, was packed to the high ceiling. The crowd was nervously waiting for the moment. And then it happened. A magic escaping trembling strings resonated across the room. And we all joined the sermon, as on command, one by one, moving rhythmically staring ahead, afraid to miss a note, or chant….anything.
Someone once called them Led Chilli Peppers describing their music as great Led Zeppelin of a 21st Century. How true.
My God they were good, better than that, absolutely awesome. MOTHER’S CAKE are incredible. MOTHER’S CAKE need to be seen. MOTHER’S CAKE are Yves Krismer (guitar, vocals), Benedikt Trenkwalder (Bass) and Jan Haußels (Drums).
Beauty is they will be back. Not a question of if but rather when. I know it. And if you want to have your cake and eat it, well…what are you waiting for ?
